Summer Peace ProgramIs designed to engage central Indiana youth in several team-building experiences oriented toward appreciation of diversity and problem solving. From 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Thursday, students are challenged with a variety of team challenge exercises (Orienteering), peer to peer dialog sessions (HIPP) and Peace Education lessons (STEP & Safe Escape.)
orienteeringStudents use HIPP activities to learn and navigate through conflict resolution stations positioned throughout the park. help increase the peace (hipp)Students share their ideas and understandings about specific topics with peers in adult supervised sessions. Each session beings with a brief HIPP Lift (ice breaker) followed by the topic session (e.g. 'Root Causes of Violence', 'Perceptions Based on Partial Knowledge') and ending with a group debrief. stepStudents learn the formal process of point-of-view problem solving by following the STEP method and asking the STEP questions: Stay Cool: "Are you ready and willing to solve this problem peacefully?" Tell your POV: "What happened? Why does it matter? How do you feel?" Explore their POV: "What happened? Why does it matter? How do you feel?" Problem Solve: "What do you want now to solve this problem peacefully?" "What are you willing to do now to solve this problem peacefully?" safe escapeStudents learn a nonviolent self-defense method that combines a simple hopping pattern with 'Peace Hands" and a series of 4 simple questions. Safe Escape transforms a competitive and potentially dangerous conflict into a cooperative dialog. |
