PEACE SCHOOL PROGRAM: SUPPORTED STANDARDS

Overview

The Peace Learning Center’s Peace School program helps students, teachers and other school staff to create a positive environment within school communities. Through interactive sessions with students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, the Peace School program helps student develop a focus on community, tools for dealing with conflict and a broad range of communication skills. In addition to meeting these core goals, the program also supports several Indiana educational standards, as reflected below.

 Kindergarten Supported Standards

English/Language Arts

  • K.5.1: Draw pictures and write words for a specific reason.
  • K.7.1: Understand and follow one- and two-step spoken directions.
  • K.7.2: Share information and ideas, speaking in complete, coherent sentences.
  • K.7.3: Describe people, places, things (including their size, color, and shape), locations, and actions.
  • K.7.4: Recite short poems, rhymes, and songs.

Social Studies:

  • K.2.3: Functions of Government: Give examples of classroom and school rules and explain how each helps us.
  • K.2.4: Roles of Citizens: Give examples of how to be a responsible family member and member of a group.
  • K.2.5: Roles of Citizens: Identify the role of students in the classroom and the importance of following school rules to ensure order and safety.

Fine Arts: Visual Arts

  • K.6.2: Create art that expresses personal ideas, interests, and feelings.
  • K.6.5: Reflect on and share work with others.
  • K.6.6: Respect personal work and the work of others.

Health & Wellness:

  • K.4.1: Identify healthy ways to express needs.
  • K.4.3: State ways to respond when in an unwanted situation.

Grade 1 Supported Standards

English/Language Arts

  • 1.7.1: Comprehension: Listen attentively.
  • 1.7.6: Speaking Applications: Recite poems, rhymes, songs, and stories.
  • 1.7.10: Use visual aids, such as pictures and objects, to present oral information

Social Studies:

  • 1.1.4: Identify local people from the past who have shown honesty, courage and responsibility.
  • 1.2.4: Roles of Citizens: Describe ways that individual actions can contribute to the common good of the community.
  • 1.2.5: Roles of Citizens: Define what a citizen is and describe the characteristics of good citizenship.

  • 1.6.2: Create artwork about self, family, and personal experiences.
  • 1.6.3: Identify and use symbols to express ideas.

Health & Wellness:

  • 1.1.2: Recognize that emotional health is one dimension of health.
  • 1.4.1: Describe healthy ways to express needs, wants and feelings.
  • 1.4.2: Identify listening skills related to health.

Physical Education

  • 1.1.4: Perform fundamental rhythmic skills alone, with a partner, or in a group.
  • 1.2.1: Demonstrate fundamental movement vocabulary and cue words for learning skills.
  • 1.2.3: Demonstrate variations in moving with directional, spatial and temporal awareness.

 Grade 2 Supported Standards

English/Language Arts

  • 2.7.4: Give and follow three- and four-step oral directions.
  • 2.7.13: Recite poems, rhymes, songs, and stories.

Social Studies:

  • 2.2.4: Roles of Citizens: Describe how people of different ages, cultural backgrounds and traditions contribute to the community and how all citizens can respect these differences.
  • 2.2.5: Roles of Citizens: Identify people who are good citizens and describe the character traits that make them admirable.

Fine Arts: Dance

  • 2.3.1: Express feelings, stories, or ideas through movement or gesture.

  • 3.6.2: Create artwork that communicates personal ideas and experiences.
  • 3.6.6: Demonstrate respect for personal work and the work of others.
  • 3.8.2: Create artwork utilizing concepts, subject matter, or the sign systems of other disciplines.

  • 3.1.1: Identify the link between healthy choices and being healthy.
  • 3.1.2: Give examples of physical and emotional health.
  • 3.2.3: State how peers can influence healthy behaviors.
  • 3.4.1: Name effective nonverbal communication skills to enhance health and wellness.
  • 3.4.3: Suggest nonviolent strategies to manage conflict.
  • 3.4.4: Illustrate how to ask for assistance with a difficult personal situation.
  • 3.7.2: Identify a healthy practice to maintain personal health and wellness.
